A casual, undefined, transitional time of jazz. In the late 40’s/early 50’s, as the fire and velocity of bebop waned, musicians could stretch out and record longer solos, concurrent with the demise of the short 78 rpm discs and the rise of the new Extended Play 33 1/3 LPs. Instead of one song per side on a 10” 78, the LP (long playing record) could contain about 20 minutes or more per side. The harmonic foundation of bebop was expanded allowing more variance from the standard and accepted chordal substitutions. And the often furious, uptempo high octane melodic bebop lead-lines became less of a steeplechase and more of a soulful strut.
