Developed in the United States after World War II, cool jazz contrasts greatly in character and style from its predecessor, bebop. Incorporating slower tempos, classical music influences, and formally constructed arrangements, cool jazz’s subdued approach began developing with musicians such as Woody Herman, Stan Getz, and Gerry Mulligan in the late 1940s. Miles Davis’s “The Birth of the Cool”, performed with a nonet, is a landmark album within the style.
