Afro-Cuban jazz brought in flavors and styles of the Caribbean, particularly Cuba and Puerto Rico, which provided a lens to view its broader and earlier roots in Africa. The mambo and samba were popular with audiences white and black, while many jazz combos added percussion instruments to augment the driving force of a standard drum kit. Machito and His Afro Cubans' 1947 collaboration with Dizzy Gillespie brought the genre to nationwide prominence.
