Founded in 1956 by famed impresario Norman Granz, Verve Records quickly made its name as the home of innumerable legends of jazz, including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Anita O’Day, and many more. Granz sold the label to MGM in 1961, ushering in a period of commercial success throughout the 1960s with Creed Taylor at the helm as producer of albums by Jimmy Smith, Stan Getz, Wes Montgomery, and others. The label’s musical remit expanded during this period as well, releasing album by both folk and rock artists of the day. The mid-1990s saw the label revived, as it released albums by Abby Lincoln, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Roy Hargrove, and others. Today Verve is now under the umbrella of the Verve Music Group, headed by Danny Bennett, son of the legendary crooner Tony Bennett.
