Description

Bebop was developed in the mid 1940's in the United States, characterized by fast tempo, complex chord progressions, rapid chord changes, numerous key changes, instrumental virtuosity and improvisation. As a reaction to the popularity of dance-centered swing music, a younger generation of jazz musicians developed this new style. Bebop focused on the combo, which usually contains a saxophone, trumpet, piano, double bass, and drums. Influential artists include saxophonist Charlie Parker, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Bud Powell, and drummer Max Roach, who can be heard together on the seminal live album of the genre, 1953's "Jazz at Massey Hall".
