Bossa Nova is a form of Latin jazz that originated in the artistic beach culture of the 1950's in Rio di Janeiro, Brazil. The style is most commonly performed with an ensemble prominently led by a nylon-string classical guitar, as well as the presence of a surdo and a cabasa in the rhythm section. Bossa Nova came to worldwide attention from the popularity of the collaboration between Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz on 1964's "Getz/Gilberto", which featured the hit "The Girl from Ipanema" sung by Joao and Astrud Gilberto. The album also featured Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, who would become the composer on many bossa nova tunes as the style gained popularity.
