Description

Fantasy Records is a record label established in 1949 by brothers Max and Sol Weiss. The early years of the label were centered around the recordings of pianist Dave Brubeck, who eventually moved on to Columbia Records. Based around artists in the San Francisco area, the label initially gained success with the unexpected success of Vince Guaraldi's composition, “Cast Your Fate to the Wind”. The label’s success continued with the signing of Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1964. In 1965, Vince Guaraldi teamed with Lee Mendelson and Bill Melendez for A Charlie Brown Christmas, the soundtrack for which became a huge seller. Saul Zaentz became label president in 1967 and purchased the label from the Weiss brothers shortly after taking the position. Zaentz followed by purchasing Prestige Records in 1971, Riverside Records in 1972 and Milestone Records in 1973. Fantasy released two collaborations between Tony Bennett and Bill Evans in 1975 and 1976 both of which were commercial and critical hits. In 2004, the label was sold to Norman Lear who merged the label with Concord Records to create Concord Music Group.
