Description

ABC/Paramount Recordings was a division of ABC Broadcasting, located in New York City. ABC Records was born in 1960 as a recording division of the parent company. They created a jazz division under the supervision of engineer Creed Taylor entitling it ABC Impulse. Engineer Bob Thiele subsequently replaced Taylor and took over the jazz recording operation. Most of Impulse's recordings were made at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs recording studio, which had a full docket of work, juggling sessions for Impulse, Blue Note and other jazz and classical sessions. Their most notable signing was tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, whose LPs Live at the Village Vanguard and A Love Supreme were sensations in the jazz world. Other notable recordings were made by Charles Mingus, Freddie Hubbard, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Art Blakey, Yusef Lateef and McCoy Tyner, among the many. Early Keith Jarrett, Gato Barbieri and Marion Brown, and others showed the way of future sounds.
