Acid jazz is a genre that has its origins in the 1980s in London’s club scene as DJs played obscure jazz records, especially those from the Blue Note label. The interest that these DJs generated led to original creations from new artists, which blended jazz, disco, funk, and soul. UK DJ Giles Peterson eventually formed the label Acid Jazz Records with producer Eddie Piller, who signed Brand New Heavies, the first mainstream hit in the genre. Other successes included Jamiroquai, A Tribe Called Quest, and Digable Planets. Acid jazz eventually declined as electronic music became more popular throughout the 1990s and 2000s, and the genre was absorbed into more modern genres such as neo soul and jazz rap.
