Description

Developed in the late 1960s as jazz musicians began incorporating influences from funk, rock, and Latin jazz into the harmonic and improvisational structure of jazz music. Different colors and timbres became possible in jazz fusion largely due to the incorporation of electric instruments. Electric pianos and guitars, provided by musicians such as Herbie Hancock and John McLaughlin, were notable inclusions. The 1970s provided many classic jazz fusion albums from legends such as Miles Davis, The Weather Report, and The Mahavishnu Orchestra. By the 1980s, fusion had been absorbed into other styles, and a more mainstream style of fusion known as smooth jazz had emerged.
