Swing is a form of American music that gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. The style features a rhythm section of double bass and drums, typically large lead sections of brass and woodwinds, and the occasional inclusion of stringed instruments. The name came from the “swing feel” present in the music, in which the sub-divisions of the beat are uneven. Swing bands typically feature instrumental soloists who melodically improvise over a chord progression. The swing style was such a dominant form of American popular music in the 1930s and 1940s that this period is commonly referred to as the “swing era”. Among the best known musicians of this time are Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Count Basie, and Louis Armstrong.
